Platte Valley Fire Protection District has 16 career firefighters and more than 30 volunteer firefighters to serve an area of more than 225 square miles around Kersey, which is roughly 10 miles east of Greeley. The department has a paramedic on call all day, every day who is hired by both the fire department and Banner Health, which also provides an ambulance to give the community advanced life support.

The fire department has state-of-the-art equipment, a swift water rescue team, dive team and a wild-land firefighting team. Each Platte Valley firefighter puts in 350-500 hours of training to better serve the public.

“The people here are the most amazing folks, and that’s what makes this (special),” Chief Barry Schaefer said. “It’s not the building or the equipment, it’s the people here who are passionate about helping the community.”
